Well known for his “ALL NIGHT LONG” eclectic dj set - flitting between soul, funk, hip hop, jazz, reggae, latin, african, ska, disco, house, funk, dubstep, breaks, soundtracks and loads more - DJ, Producer & Cartoonist Andy Carthy aka Mr. Scruff is back mid May with "Friendly Bacteria", his new album on Ninja Tune, 6 years after “Ninja Tuna” his last album.
You can still count upon a shedload of gritty funk and stony soul but the new record displays a stripped back musicality, a depth that maybe hasn’t been there before. In Carthy’s own pithy words it’s “tougher, sparser, less samples, more bass. More vocals and collaborations and shorter tunes.” Carthy puts down a lot of this development to his spending more time working and jamming with other musicians (Vocalist Denis Jones, Vanessa Freeman, Robert Owens and musicians Matthew Halsall, Andy Kingslow, Kaidi Tatham, Sara Dowling and Taz Modi, plus the bass sensation Phil France from Cinematic Orchestra)
His cartoon drawings will still illustrate gig flyers, CD covers, and accompany him at gigs as live animated visuals.
